Zippers are commonly used in apparel, bags, shoes and boots for both functional and decorative purposes. When you want to customize exclusive zippers for your brand, understanding the structure and customizable parts of zippers will help you communicate with zipper manufacturers precisely.
As a professional customized zipper manufacturer, we will introduce you the main parts, terms and types of zippers in detail.
The Complete Anatomy of a Zipper

1.Slider (also known as the car or body)
A device that controls the opening and closing of a zipper by pulling the zipper teeth (or coils) closer or further apart to open or close the zipper.
Type of slider
- Auto-lock sliders: Lock in place when the pull tab is released - ideal for garments.
- Non-lock sliders: Freely move unless tension is applied - common in bags or tents.
- Reversible sliders: Used in reversible jackets or bags.
2.Pull Tab
This is the part you grip to move the slider. It can come in standard metal shapes, custom logo pulls, ergonomic designs, or even keychain-style pullers.
The pull tab is often branded and can be a key visual element for fashion labels.
3.Teeth (also called the Chain)
These are the interlocking elements on each side of the zipper tape.
Type of teeth
- Coil teeth: Made from nylon or polyester - flexible and smooth.
- Metal teeth: Durable, often used in jeans and outerwear.
- Molded plastic teeth: Lightweight and chunky - good for children's wear or sportwear.
4.Tape
The tape is the fabric section that the teeth or coil are attached to.
Typically made from polyester or cotton, the tape is sewn into the garment or product seam.
Differences between tapes: width, color, waterproof or not
5.Top Stop & Bottom Stop
These small metal or plastic pieces are found at either end of the zipper to:
- Top Stop: Prevent the slider from sliding off the top
- Bottom Stop: Hold the chain together and stop the slider from separating the teeth
6.Retainer Box & Insertion Pin (only on separating/open-end zippers)
Usually located at the bottom of the zipper, it allows the zipper to separate completely. Commonly used on jackets, hoodies, and coats.
- Retainer Box: The box at the bottom where the pin is inserted
- Insertion Pin: A slim, rigid piece that goes into the box to align the zipper halves
7.Reinforcement Film or Patches
Commonly used in tents, diving suits, military uniforms and other functional garments to improve the practicality and durability of the product.
