Denim buttons are a common fastener for jeans. Unlike standard sewn buttons, denim buttons are riveted to the fabric using a cap-and-stud system, usually consisting of two parts, the cap and the tack, a design that provides superior strength and long-lasting durability. This article introduces you to the common types of denim buttons to help you choose the right buttons for your denim project.

The Three Main Types of Jeans Buttons
Denim buttons all function to hold jeans in place, but because of their different shapes and designs, we've categorized them into three main groups: Tack Buttons, Donut Buttons, Stud or Rivet Buttons.

Tack Buttons
The flat head stud button is the most commonly used button in today's mass-produced jeans. It consists of two parts: a metal cap and a tack (a post that resembles a nail). To install these buttons, a hammer or press is used to drive the staple through the denim and lock it to the bottom of the metal cap.
Tack Buttons have a flat surface and can be customized with brand logos or patterns, and are commonly used on belts and lapels.
Factory Insights for Brands: Our tack buttons are engineered from high-grade Zinc Alloy and Solid Brass, ensuring they withstand heavy industrial garment washing processes (such as stone washing, bleaching, and enzyme washing) without rusting or color fading. They are compatible with high-speed automated attaching machinery, drastically reducing apparel factory reject rates.
Donut Buttons
Donut Buttons are named for the hollow hole in the center of their design, which resembles a donut. It has a vintage look and is often used in vintage work pants and military jeans.
Technical Spec: Ideal for heritage, vintage, and heavy-duty denim (14oz and above). The hollow center allows for secure dual-pin attachment, passing strict 90N pull tests required for European and US apparel safety regulations (including children's wear).

3. Stud/Rivet Buttons
Although stud buttons are often mistaken for decorative rivets, they actually play a functional role in closure, especially in traditional button placket designs. Like the rivets used on pockets, these buttons use a system of metal studs and sockets to lock them securely into place.
| Button Type | Best Application | Logo Precision | Washing Resistance | Cost Efficiency |
| Standard Tack Button | Mass-market jeans, jackets, denim shirts | High (Laser / Engraving) | Excellent | Very High |
| Donut Button | Vintage denim, heavy-duty workwear (14oz+) | Medium (Stamped) | Superior (Heavy Wash) | High |
| Shank Denim Button | Premium fashion denim, skirts, light jackets | Ultra-High (3D Molding) | Moderate | Medium |
Why riveted instead of sewn?
Denim jeans are under more pressure than regular pants - bending, sitting and stretching. Riveted buttons are stronger under pressure and less likely to fall off, making them a popular choice for workwear and fashion denim.
