As consumers' consumption habits change, people often choose clothing with a sense of design or brand concept. As a result, customized hardware such as buttons, zippers and metal tags have become a key differentiator for apparel companies.
In this article, we'll take you through the button production process, explore the customization options available, and show you how to choose the right manufacturer to bring your design vision to life.
Custom Button Production Process

Design & Custom Specification Approval
Every custom button begins with a design brief. The buyer (brand or designer) works closely with the button manufacturer's development team to finalize:
- Button shape, diameter, and thickness
- Logo or text placement
- Color (often matched to Pantone shades)
- Backing type (shank, flat, sew-through)
- Quantity and timeline

Raw Material Selection
The choice of material for buttons not only affects the appearance and texture of the product, but also the service life. When choosing button materials, you need to consider factors such as durability, weight and environmental protection.
- Commonly used materials for customized buttons
- Polyester, ABS, resin (injection-molded)
- Zinc alloy or brass (metal stamping or casting)
- Wood, coconut shell, corozo (eco-friendly, hand-processed)

Molding, Stamping, or Carving
Depending on the material and shape, different manufacturing methods are used:
- Injection Molding (plastic/resin): molten plastic is injected into a mold cavity.
- Centrifugal Casting (polyester): liquid resin is poured into a rotating cylinder to form rods, which are then sliced into button blanks.
- Metal Stamping (zinc/brass): flat sheets are stamped or embossed with force.
- Hand Carving / Laser Cutting (wood, shell): blanks are shaped and refined individually or via CNC machines.
All the customized molds in kunshuo can be kept for you for 3 years free of charge, which is convenient for you to reuse them when you reorder in the future.
Surface Finishing
Buttons undergo finishing processes to match the desired aesthetic and protect the material:
- Electroplating (nickel-free silver, gold, black nickel, gunmetal)
- Spray painting or UV coating
- Laser engraving or pad printing for logos or text
- Antique finishes or textured coatings

Hole Drilling, Shank Installation & Backing Configuration
After finishing:
- Sew-through buttons are drilled (2-hole or 4-hole)
- Shank buttons have loops attached to the back
- Snap-on or rivet buttons get matched with compatible fasteners
Each backing choice affects how the button is attached to the garment and how it performs under stress.
Polishing, Tumbling & Deburring
Buttons are tumbled in vibrating polishing machines or manually deburred to:
- Smooth rough edges
- Achieve uniform shine or matte finish
- Remove any leftover plating or burrs
This step is essential for both appearance and user comfort, especially in high-contact garments like uniforms or workwear.

Quality Control & Testing
Before packaging, custom buttons go through strict inspection:
- Visual check for color, shape, and logo accuracy
- Functionality test for button tension or snap reliability
- Durability test (e.g., pull tests, salt spray for metal finishes)
Packaging & Delivery
Finally, buttons are sorted and packed:
- Bulk bagging, blister packs, or custom-printed boxes
- Labeling with lot numbers or barcodes
- Export packaging for sea or air shipment
Delivery can be domestic or international, our factories provide sample batches first to confirm quality before full-scale runs.
